Reminiscences from Tony (August 2015): "I was up [in Burntisland] for two prolonged periods during the building of the Montreal City and the Halifax City, for Bristol City Lines. I stayed at the Kingswood Hotel, which was then run by Andrew and Kay Methven(?) if I recall correctly. ..... The welders who doubled as bouncers in the dance halls in Kirkcaldy would give us free passes to the dances. ..... It is rather a co-incidence
doing this, for only two weeks ago at around lunch time, the door bell rang and a somehow recognisable but older grey haired man said 'Tony'. To which I replied 'Good Heavens! - Jimmy Kennedy'. We had last sailed together on these ships nearly 50 years ago. He was from Troon and came to join us on the maiden voyage of one or other. [Two of the photos are] postcards given me by my old company of both the Montreal and Halifax out on trials over the measured mile, so in those shots somewhere down in the engineroom would have been
quite a number of the shipyard men." |
